Turning up the heat on Poplar Baths

P ressure is building up from local people to invest in Poplar Baths, so they can once again be a community resource.
Poplar Baths Built in 1933 this old building is seen by many as the hub around which Poplar should rotate. It has been empty since 1985, but in February more than 50 local people met to plan how best it might once again serve the community.
Many at the meeting had fond memories of the Baths. Danny could remember learning to swim in this pool when his Wade Street school classes used to enjoy their free Friday boys sessions.
John remembered getting a bath for 3d (3 old pence) when you were only allowed six inches of water! And Sarah reminisced about the Steam Baths where she and her friends met on Thursday afternoons and where after their soak they were offered a cup of tea and piece of toast by Kit or Lou.
People also recalled winter evening dances, boxing and wrestling and the theatre.

There is to be a programme of consultation about the future of the Baths and if you want your views heard you should contact:
