7. Planning and design principles

Designing for safety

New development on this site should be designed in such a way as to encourage natural surveillance of the surrounding streets, DLR station, Grove Villas, and internal space. Transparent building frontages may be necessary to achieve this, particularly at ground floor level. Balconies may also contribute to increased natural surveillance and could be used where they do not prejudice the amenity of local residents.

Any scheme on this site would be required to obtain Secure by Design accreditation.

Designing for energy efficiency

The Council will welcome proposals for new development on this site which demonstrate that account has heen taken of the promotion ot energy efficiency, for example, through maximising the use of natural lighting and heating.

New development on this site should not prejudice the sunlight/daylight requirements of neighbouring properties.

Designing for access

New development on this site should be designed in such a way as to provide good access for those in wheelchairs and for those with push chairs or prams.
